About Kuvempu University

Laying in the midst of natural beauty the foundation stone of the main campus of Kuvempu University was put at Shankaraghatta on the outskirts of Shimoga town in the year 1987. Located at Bhadara reservoir near the river Bhadra, symbolizing the flow of knowledge the university runs 41 post graduate departments with varying fields such as arts, commerce, science, law and education offering a host of Post Graduate, P.G. Diploma and Under Graduate programs. The university has 40 affiliated colleges spread across the districts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur. With vibrancy and excitement spread across the campus, the university conducts many seminars, guest lectures, symposia and workshops to provide a diverse perspective to its students.

The administrative block called the "Kuvempu Shathamanothsava Bhavan" in its main campus (Jnana Sahyadri) governs the proper running and smooth flow of administration of the university. With a proper hierarchical structure the Kuvempu Shathamanothsava Bhavan has the office of vice chancellor, registrar and host of different verticals including HR, finance, development, reserved category, planning, monitoring and evaluation board. Each and every block of the campus is computerized and well equipped with the modern technological equipments of use. The post graduate department of studies offering specializations in steams such as English, political science, economics, sociology and mass communication is located in the academic block of the university. Other than the above mentioned there are departments of computer science and mathematics, science block and a newly constructed library building houses their respective courses and streams of education. In the year 2005-06 a herbal garden spreading across a wide area was inaugurated keeping the studies related to horticulture in perspective.

Under the esteemed governance of Professor S.A. Bari, the current vice chancellor of the Kuvempu University and the members of the academic council the university is striving hard and making every effort to better the quality of education provided by it in all the aspects with an aim of improving the grade status (B) provided to it by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) in the year 2008-09. In an attempt to do so the university has recently gone in for collaboration with the Shimoga district chamber of commerce and industry in order to provide skill development training to it students. Further the university plans to set up a research centre for the studies related to ancient science and technology which would prove to be first of its kind in the nation. Keeping in mind the needs of students located in far of places the university also runs 50 correspondence courses at both the under graduate and post graduate level which in turn serves more than twenty thousand incumbents. The university’s other backward classes(OBC) and minority cell also provides scholarships to students of families living below the poverty line for various post graduate courses, the fees offered to whom goes as low as Rs. 400 per subject on an annual basis. With such efforts the university is determined to secure the career in order to better the life of the youth of the nation.
